Getting Started with Email Audits

Email audits verify whether the email addresses in your contact lists are real, active, and safe to send to. Sending to invalid addresses causes bounces, which damage your sender reputation and can get your account blocked by email providers. Running an audit before every campaign identifies bad addresses so you can remove them before sending. Audits use SMTP verification, DNS checks, and advanced scoring signals to classify each email with high accuracy.

Running an Audit

To run an audit, go to Email > Audits and select a contact list. Click 'Run Audit' to start the verification process. The platform checks each email address by verifying the domain's MX records, testing the mailbox via SMTP, and analysing additional signals like DKIM, DMARC, and known spam traps. Audits run in the background — you can continue working while verification completes. For large lists, the process may take a few hours. You will receive a notification when the audit finishes. Re-audit lists periodically, as email addresses go stale over time.

Understanding Audit Results

Each email address receives a verification status after the audit. Verified means the mailbox exists and accepts mail — these are safe to send to. Invalid means the address does not exist or is permanently undeliverable — remove these immediately. Catch-all means the domain accepts mail for any address, so the specific mailbox cannot be confirmed — send to these with caution. Unknown means the mail server did not respond conclusively during verification — these are retried automatically. The audit summary shows your list health at a glance: percentage verified, invalid, catch-all, and unknown.

Viability Rules

Viability rules determine whether a contact list is safe to use in a campaign. The platform evaluates your audit results against deliverability thresholds. If your list has too many invalid or unknown addresses, it is flagged as high risk. A healthy list should have at least 90% verified addresses and fewer than 3% invalid. Lists that fall below these thresholds show a warning before sending. Use the audit results to clean your list — remove invalid addresses, re-verify unknowns, and consider excluding catch-all addresses from cold outreach. A clean list protects your sender reputation and improves your open and reply rates.
